Once you learn how to do the belt change it is an easy job. Ĭan you do a timing chain in 1/2 an hour ? No you cannot. It takes me longer to find and clean up my tools and put them away afterwords than to actually change the belt. On the older cars IDIs & TDIs without having to remove all the extra parts of the A4 design take about an 1/2 an hour. If I really tried I bet it could be done in around 2 1/2 hours. Removing & reinstalling the parts to get to the belt took the most time, about 3 1/2 hours. No longer than the older belt design VW/Audi used for the last 30 years. The replacement of and the timing of the belt took about 20 minutes. I did an A4 TDI timing belt earlier this week. To me it makes it easier to time the engine once the belt is replaced. I for one don't see having to lock all the timing parts in place during the belt replacement as being a problem. And because the chain design is less precise timing isn't required to be as precise at change time. Timing chain systems have to give up mpgs and power because the timing chain system loose preciseness over time. If the timing belt was simple to change, I wouldn't be b!tching."
Looking at the instructions, I'd say changing a timing chain on an old MB diesel is much easier than changing the belt on a modern TDI, but I know it's kind of apples and oranges. What wears out timing belts is age and heat because it's rubber. What wears out a quality timing chain is particles in the oil, hence the need to change the oil regularly. But one gentleman on the MB forum has pushed his timing chain over 500K miles, and it still isn't dangerously stretched. "tjl, I'm totally aware that timing chains wear out too, eventually. And belts also don't stretch which gives more precise mechanical timing over the life of the engines' opertation which makes it perform more efficiently. So belts are used because they are reliable & cheaply replaced. Not to mention the fact that it can cost as much as 5 to 10 times as much to replace a chain as compared to the same engine with a belt driven cam system. I know many don't replace them and get away with it, but the manufacturer still recomends the replacement interval. ġ0 years or 150,000 miles is the common replacement interval on an interferance type timing chain engines.
Īnd don't believe that a car equipped with a timing chain last forever, timing chains do stretch & they do break. I prefer not to go beyond the 5 year point mysself though. Ħ years is at the outside range of what is acceptable and safe. The car only has 25,000 miles on the clock but the belt was over 6 years old. I changed a belt on a 2000 automatic TDI last week.
